Insurance Plans for the Disabled

Executive Summary – Leading a life with all its challenges is not easy. If one is disabled, it becomes a little more tough. Insurance will help one with the finances. Swavlamban Health Insurance Scheme and Nirmaya are health insurance plans for the differently abled. 

India has a large population of people with disabilities. As per the census in 2011, there were about 21 million people with some form of disability be it related to movement, hearing, vision, speech or mental illness. Even then, there are not too many health insurance policies for the differently abled. A couple of Government organisations have joined hands with insurance companies and devised health insurance plans. Let us look at them in detail –

Swavlamban Health Insurance Scheme- New India Health Insurance
National Trust’s Nirmaya
Description
It is a health insurance policy for people with low vision, blindness, loco-motor disability, mental retardation, mental illness, and hearing impairment.
An insurance policy designed for financial cover for people with autism, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and mental retardation.
It is designed by National Trust and ICICI Lombard Insurance.
One can avail of the scheme by applying through registered
organizations.
Eligibility
Any person with disabilities in the age group of 0 to 65 years can avail of this policy.
The person should submit a Person with Disability (PwD) certificate.
Any person with valid disability and a disability certificate.
Sum Assured
Rs. 2,00,000 for a year.
​Available for Rs. 1,00,000 as reimbursement basis.
Key Features
Premium has to be paid for a maximum of 35 years only. Beyond that the policy is valid till death of handicapped dependent.
If the policy holder dies before the handicapped
dependent, the Death Benefit is paid partly in lumpsum and partly in instalments. 
​If the handicapped dependent dies, the policyholder can
get premium refund or change the policy accordingly.
It is an insurance cover for people with special needs.
​It covers the disability and has sub-limits for many  other issues of health.

Benefits
​Income tax deductions as per Section 80DDA are available.
Cashless treatment available in New India Assurance’s network of hospitals
There are no pre-medical tests prior to buying the policy.
OPD treatment   up to Rs. 10,000 is covered and treatment for pre-existing medical problems are also covered.
There is no medical test required
There is no limit on the age.
It covers OPD treatment, regular medical check-up and corrective surgery for existing problems unlike other schemes.
Premium
 Yearly Premium – Rs. 357 
Yearly Premium – Rs. 250 for families with income less than Rs. 15,000 per month.
Rs. 500 for  families with income greater than Rs. 15,000 per month.
Other Comments
It is only available for families with income less than Rs. 3,00,000 per annum.
It does not cover all disabilities nor multiple disabilities.
​Awareness about the product is low and people are 
not able to take  advantage of it.
People enrolled from September 1 to February 28 are covered from April 2. People enrolled from March 1 to August 31 are covered from October 2.

It is important to be aware of such schemes and spread the word about them so that even the differently abled know that there are products that can help them.
