As an investor, you invest in stocks, Mutual funds, bonds etc. Some investors are very cautious and take the effort to be aware of precautions to be taken before investing in different types of instruments. But some might not have adequate knowledge to take informed investment decisions.

Here are some of the steps that you must take as a cautious investor:

1) Get all documentation in written format regarding the investment.
2) Understand the terms and conditions of the investment.
3) Find out about the legal stand of the investment.
4)Make your investments through registered intermediaries who are under the regulatory control.
5) Be sure of the action to be taken in case something out of the ordinary happens.

But in spite of precautionary measures taken by you and legal controls being in place, as an investor, you might have some problems or grievances. Do you know where to take your problem if it cannot be solved by the company/mutual fund against which you have a complaint?

There is a mechanism in place to address your grievances and you must be aware of that. The table below presents some of the common types of grievances and to whom it can be addressed to:

There is another way to file complaints. There is a website – SCORES, which stands for “SEBI Complaints Redressal System”.  You can access it at http://scores.gov.in which is run by SEBI. Investors can file their complaints on varied topics like non-receipt of dividend, stock price manipulation, insider trading etc.  When you file a complaint, you can track it using the user account that you have created for yourself. You can remind SEBI about it if there is a delay in the response. SEBI can ask for clarifications from you regarding the complaint and you can also upload supporting documents.

What do we do when the respective regulatory authority fails to respond or fails to act to our satisfaction? You can use RTI. We recommend you to use this very powerful tool in a judicious manner. Please click here to get more details on RTI.

Did you face any problem with your investments? How did you handle it and were you able to get it resolved easily?
